Diversity of Family and Kinship Life – The Importance of Extended Family Relationships*

In: Zeitschrift für Bevölkerungswissenschaft, Vol. 33, 2/2008, p. 207-228, Wiesbaden: VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, ISSN: 0340-2398, DOI: 10.1007/s12523-009-0011-8

Abstract: The article discusses the relationships with the extended family. Kinship relationships beyond parent-child relationships are relatively seldom a topic for family research. Do the studies carried out to date justify the classical presumption that extended families are relatively unimportant? The paper shows that there is a need to revise this assessment. Emotional ties, contacts and social exchange of assistance is not restricted to the core family. Over and above this, various aspects are discussed which favour an increase in significance of the extended family.
