What Contribution is Made by Political Demography?*
In: Zeitschrift für Bevölkerungswissenschaft, Vol. 32, 3-4/2007, p. 429-443, Wiesbaden: VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, ISSN: 0340-2398
Political demography consists of a range of topics within political science which requires further distinctions. This is the aim of this article. It was a long process until the media took sufficient note of demographic change. Reputable demographers such as Josef Schmid had put forward quite some time ago plausible development trends which have now come to pass. A "démographie politique" must undertake to transfer demographic knowledge to the political arena. Demography has an elementary impact on policy. Political science must work together with demography in both conceptual and constructive terms, and must develop relevant standards for family, population, migration and social policy for judgment under demographic auspices. The sound future scenarios which demography can develop as no other discipline for the next decades then in turn transfer to the policy arena – and hence as a spectrum of tasks also to political demography – a solid basis which can be used as a foundation for change in conceptual, as well as factual and creative terms. It is not necessary to call this "demographic engineering", but naturally there is scope for theory and practice.
