Estimate and Projection of World Population by the United Nations*

In: Zeitschrift für Bevölkerungswissenschaft, Vol. 32, 3-4/2007, p. 577-596, Wiesbaden: VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, ISSN: 0340-2398

The following paper provides highlights and background information on the United Nations World Population Prospects (WPP), which is a statistical compendium (and electronic database) of population estimates and projections for all countries of the world. With its 2006 revision, released in early 2007, world population estimates and projections have now been published by the United Nations Population Division for more then 50 years. Contrary to popular belief, the main work in preparing the WPP is not related to the projections, but to the estimation of historical population trends of now some 230 countries and territories – often on the basis of very poor empirical data. The paper outlines some of the major trends in world population ageing and illustrates some of the challenges in the process of population estimation. The World Population Prospects are available from the following web site: www.unpopulation.org
