The USA and the European Union – Demography and Major Powers*
In: Zeitschrift für Bevölkerungswissenschaft, Vol. 32, 3-4/2007, p. 703-712, Wiesbaden: VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, ISSN: 0340-2398
This article shows a comparison between the two regional units: 1) Europe (EU-27) and 2) America (the United States), both for the past (1950-2005) and for possible future development. The reasons are examined for the differing demographic growth, which is more favourable for the USA, and then the outlook is sketched until 2050. Finally, the comparable economic situation of the major powers is presented, once the Chinese data have been corrected. A qualitative portrayal, based on historical observations, is provided, finally, on India’s potential for growth.
