Regional Development Prognosis and Demographic Change*
In: Zeitschrift für Bevölkerungswissenschaft, Vol. 32, 1-2/2007, p. 123-136, Wiesbaden: VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, ISSN: 0340-2398
One particularity of demographic change is its spatial diversity. The regional development prognosis, which provides a tool with which benchmark figures of future spatial development can be estimated for the purpose of advising policy-makers, is particularly well suited to demonstrate the regional aspects of demographic change. In particular the still anticipated simultaneity of demographic growth and demographic shrinking in sometimes closelylocated spatial units leads to different, potentially contradictory impacts and challenges. The three-dimensional alignment of spatial policy to economic, social and ecological goals poses for administrations the major challenge of integrating demographic change into “creative reconstruction”.
