The Reasons for Migration of Intra-European Migrants*

In: Zeitschrift für Bevölkerungswissenschaft, Vol. 30, 1/2005, p. 131-154, Wiesbaden: VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, ISSN: 0340-2398

One of the main questions in migration research is which reasons migrants have for crossing boundaries. For a long time, it was assumed that it is particularly economic reasons that are responsible for migration. Only in recent research have explanatory models been established which go beyond the classical economic push-pull concept. In this context, this contribution discusses the migration motives of those EU citizens who are transnationally mobile within Europe. It can be shown, on the basis of longitudinal data, that purely economic reasons play a smaller part than is generally assumed. Instead, social and cultural reasons have a much stronger impact on migration decisions. The empirical foundation of this article is primary data collected at the beginning of 2002 in Berlin.
