Disintegration, Anomie and Adaptational Patterns of Second-Generation Immigrants in Switzerland*

In: Zeitschrift für Bevölkerungswissenschaft, Vol. 26, 3-4/2001, p. 377-386, Opladen: Verlag Leske + Budrich, ISSN: 0340-2398

This article shows that second-generation Italians and Turks in Switzerland are structurally disadvantaged and underprivileged and that they react with individual anomie (deprivational anomie as well as orientational anomie). As a result there are tendencies towards "re-ethnicization" (that is, the perception of discrimination, the motivation to segregate, and the intention to return). These tendencies are especially distinguishable in the Turkish people. The data used come from a survey in the canton of Zurich in which young Italian and Turkish adults were compared with a Swiss control group.
