This article contains the author's statement on the essay "Integration Research from a European Perspective" by Friedrich Heckmann. The author refers to the EFFNATIS examples presented in Heckmann's observations as a "good test of recent developments in these studies in Europe". The author critically discusses the integration theories and their application in practice. He particularly focuses on definition, measurement and control of migrant integration. In the author's view, a systematic approach to migrant integration would make most sense in which integration is less a sum of individual mechanisms, and more a dynamic system of a number of relationships. As regards the integration of migrants in Europe, he calls for a new European integration policy and provides details on how this could be achieved.
