The "Mini Divorce": The Positive Influence of Partnership Dissolutions prior to First Marriage on the Divorce Risk during First Marriage*

The influence of consensual unions on the stability of the subsequent marriage and the influence of a first on the second divorce has been analysed in detail in other studies. The focus of this paper is the influence of the unsuccessful premarital partnership on the stability of a subsequent marriage to a different partner. This article will show that the experience of pre-marital separations can have a negative impact on the stability of a person's first marriage. This thesis is examined and verified using a cohort of 1,987 German former high-school pupils born in 1955. The social, psychological and financial costs of pre-marital separation increase the propensity to divorce, whilst the destabilising impact of such separations increases with the costs. At the same time, it is shown that the impact of separation is greater if there was a common household than if a partnership without common household is dissolved.
